LESSON 7: The Power of Observation
You can take advantage of many great opportunities to complete the KRA observation items during the typical school day. These not only include your classroom activities and routines, but during play, transitions, and even in the cafeteria at lunchtime. Check out the video to get tips from our teachers around completing the KRA observations.

In addition to the ones in the video, here are a few more observation tips:
  • Plan ahead. Review the observational items and look for opportunities to observe children during your daily schedule.
  • Take notes about what you observe. Then, go back and check your comments before you actually enter final scores - they might have an impact on the scores you assign.
  • If you are unsure about which rating to assign, look to observe that skill in a different setting or situation.
  • Remember that prompting a child to demonstrate a skill is different than assisting the child to demonstrate the skill.
Watch the video to learn more about the use of reports.
TIP
You can collect KRA observation data during your regular school day. Typical routines, activities, and transitions are great opportunities to observe students. You can plan intentional opportunities for observation. It may be easiest to document observations for a small group of students at a time.
