LESSON 5: What makes the KRA assessment different from others?
The KRA is the creation of two states - Maryland and Ohio - in collaboration with the national education agency WestEd and Johns Hopkins University School of Education Center for Technology in Education. It's research-based, standards-aligned, and it's been rigorously tested so that it assesses exactly what it's meant to assess. And because it's a statewide assessment rather than a district one, it can inform policymakers and other stakeholders.
What really sets the KRA apart, though, is the way it takes a "whole child" approach to assessment. While some assessments only focus on a single domain, the KRA gathers information across all four domains to measure a child's readiness for school. By focusing not only on academic readiness but also on social, physical/motor and executive functioning development, the KRA can take a broad snapshot of all the elements of a child's development.
